Philosophy of Education
Educators are tasked with the incredibly challenging, yet simultaneously rewarding job of educating the youth, by giving them the means, motivation and opportunity to learn what is necessary to succeed in not only a career, but in life. Overall, I believe there are three areas that play a major role in making learning successful for all students: student empowerment, embracing curiosity and catering to all learning needs.
First and foremost, I strongly believe in student empowerment. I think it is vital to not only help children learn academically, but to help them learn life skills that will benefit them for the rest of their life. In order for this to happen, many different things need to occur. Most importantly, students need to feel safe and secure in the classroom environment. This can be achieved by creating a classroom community in which all students feel comfortable freely sharing their thoughts, opinions and ideas even if those ideas differ from those around them. Then, I feel it is vital to let the students take responsibility and ownership of their learning environment by giving each person in the community a job that is necessary to for the school day to run smoothly. Additionally, making decisions, as a community will help students realize that they are in charge of their learning.
Next, I believe that children have a natural drive to be curious and learn and it is my job as an educator to enhance that drive. Likewise, that is why I firmly believe that taking inventory of my students likes and interests because it will enable me to be purposeful in my planning and provide my students will topics and information that they want to learn about.
Lastly, I believe children learn in a multitude of ways, and it is my job to cater my teaching to my student's individual needs and in the way that will benefit them the most. There is no, one size fits all teaching approach. It is my responsibility to find out how each of my students learn best, so I can plan my instruction to present material in a way that is most effective and beneficial to them.
