Goal
The past few weeks my goal has been to strengthen student-led mathematical discourse. This week I would like to focus on helping my students truly listen to one another, which I think will help them link to each other's ideas. I will do this by adding, "What I heard ________ say was...." to my conversation phrase list. I think asking students to summarize what a peer said would make them become accountable and really listen to what other students are sharing. I also want to use it as a way to get every student participating in the conversation.
Reflection
This week I continued trying strategies that would help my students' link to one another during our whole group conversations. I observed that asking them to summarize what one another is saying is a great accountability strategy. I informed my kiddos that I may ask any of them to summarize what the speaker was saying so they all had to make sure they were truly listening. At first, I was worried about putting my kids on the spot, however I decided that we have spent so much time and continue to spend time on community building that we have established an environment where it is okay to share thinking and make mistakes. Once my kids realized that they could be "called on" at any time, they all truly made an attempt to listen, which then naturally lent itself to students adding on to each others thoughts. And, the kids that were not listening simply stated that they weren't really listening and just asked their peer to repeat their thinking again. This is one of the best strategies I have tried with my class thus far.
